Since 1993, the Women’s Fund of Central Illinois has looked out for the interests of the female population. By setting a goal to reach a one million dollar endowment they continue to help women who need it most through their grant making. Surprisingly, less than five percent of charitable contributions go towards funding women’s programs.
Through their endowment they have been able to grant more than $160,000 to programs benefiting women and girls. The Women’s Fund of Central Illinois continues to bring women’s issues to the forefront in Central Illinois.
The Women's Fund grants $7800 to Peoria Housing Authority
In January of 2010 Peoria Housing Authority began its new program called Access to Resource and Referral Opportunities (A.R.R.O.). Due to new qualifications for housing residents are required to attend school or work while also paying utilities. The ultimate goal of A.R.R.O. is for residents to be self-sufficient. A.R.R.O guides residents through steps to achieving these goals and stand on their own two feet.
Program components consist of GED Classes and soft skills training. While the program is open to everyone a majority of those served are women specifically single mothers. With an $8000 grant from the Women’s Fund, A.R.R.O. was able to provide bus passes and instructor fees for the GED program. While something as a bus pass may seem so small it is an essential to tenants being served by A.R.R.O in order to get to a job or an interview.
